What is the Science Based Targets Initiative?
The Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) is a collaboration between CDP, WRI, the UN Global Compact, and WWF. It sets clear emissions reduction targets for companies based on the Paris Agreement and the 1.5-degree goal. Science-Based Targets are a central component of every decarbonization and net-zero strategy—across all industries. SBTi has already published several guidelines, including the FLAG standard for forestry, land use, and agriculture. Additional industry-specific standards are currently under development.
Why should companies set science-based targets?
Companies are under increasing pressure to reduce their emissions and play an active role in combating climate change. The Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) provides a clear, science-based framework for developing climate targets that are consistent with the Paris Agreement’s 1.5-degree goal. With SBTi-compliant targets, companies can not only meet regulatory requirements but also secure strategic competitive advantages. The key benefits are:
Which companies can set science-based targets?
Especially in high-emission industries, setting targets is crucial for the transition to a climate-neutral economy. Currently, however, companies in the fossil fuel sector are exempt—their obligations and validations have been temporarily suspended until specific guidelines are developed.
Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), on the other hand, can submit their short- and long-term climate targets through a specially tailored validation process. SBTi Services reserves the right to conduct an audit before and after the adoption of new commitments, as well as during the review of the submitted targets.
Currently, no targets for cities, public institutions, or nonprofit organizations are being evaluated. However, cities can express their interest through the Science Based Targets Network (SBTN).
